Flyway Children's Exchange Program Phase 1, 3rd Session
The third and final session of the “Flyway Children's Exchange Program Phase 1” was held on June 22, 2025, in Ganghwa, Republic of Korea as the main venue.
A total of 17 children participated: 6 from Fukuoka, 2 from Yatsushiro, 4 from Okinawa, and 7 from Ganghwa.
At the third session, children from Ganghwa introduced the wetlands.
After the introduction of the wetlands, a workshop was held to name the Black-Faced Spoonbills chicks F11, F12, and F13.
They are all wonderful names filled with wishes of the children who participated!
We hope that the three chicks, with the warm hearts of the children, will grow up to be healthy and happy.

Introducing Ganghwa Tidal Flats
A live broadcast from the boat introduced the main breeding site of the Black-faced Spoonbill, called "각시암", on the Ganghwa Tidal Flat in Incheon, Republic of Korea.
The children also took videos at the Ganghwa Tidal Flat to show us the creatures that live in the tidal flat and that the Black-Faced Spoonbills also come to the rice paddies.

Ganghwa Tidal Flat
A vast tidal flat stretching around Ganghwa Island, in Incheon Republic of Korea. It is internationally important as a breeding ground for BFS.

We named 3BFSs together
The children first watched a video of BFS chicks and shared their thoughts. The children brainstormed name ideas at each venue, and presented them with their meaning. After they exchanged their thoughts, the following names were decided: “Fi-cheo-gi”(Ganghwa, F11), “Shiro”(Fukuoka & Yatsushiro, F12), and “Kang-gwa-a”(Okinawa, F13). The names will be officially registered.

Name:Fi-cheo-gi
Origin:It comes from a Korean onomatopoeia”fi-cheok fi-cheok”(to shake).
It is associated with how BFSs wade their bills from side to side to feed.
Name:Shiro
Origin: It was named after “jiro” in Wajiro and “shiro” in Yatsushiro. The “jiro” in Wajiro means white in Japanese, which is also pronounced “shiro.”
White is also the color of BFS’s body.

Origin:“Kang” is named after “Gang”hwa and “Kan”koku(Republic of Korea in Japanese.)
We added “gwa-a” which
is a nickname in Okinawa for something small and cute.
Canvas painted by everyone
Through the three children's exchange sessions in the first phase, children from each region painted pictures and messages on one canvas.
